DJ Quik Burns Royalty Check On Instagram

DJ Quik is one of the best producers in Hip-Hop history. Period. However, he doesn’t feel he has gotten the credit he deserves. During a recent post on social media, he burns a royalty check from Death Row Records and vents a few frustrations in the act of defiance. In addition to talking about not getting credit for certain hit records, he also has specific words about not being recognized for his legendary contributions to the game.

“I’m starting to get to a point where I’m impatient, and I feel disrespected. I’m not going to be the underdog of this music industry anymore. I am to be respected as a king and a lord that I am, a God when it comes to production. I need all of my fucking credits.”

Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1

So, with my OnTheGo reviews, which will cover Eps, playlist and short projects I feel are significant to the culture. With my first piece I will cover “Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1. I love Saweetie’s rapper presences because I never know what to expect from her. From my experience when she’s on a track I’m always shocked that she can rap the way she does. It’s like when I hear Dreezy or Jack Harlow I always have to double-take/play their again songs even if it’s just a feature. I believe they have very distinctive voices that separate them from the rest of the new rappers they’re classed with.
First up is Saweetie’s “Pretty Summer Playlist: Season1. I hope we get a female posse cut from this series, Saweetie has put together. This project dropped on April 16th and it took away from the talk about her relationship with Quavo of Migo’s being over.
“How you figure, I ain’t the woman that you thought // You was humpin’ thots, f**kin’ narcissist you just mad you got caught”.(See-Saw Feat Kendra Jae)
That bar is a jab at Quavo after some comments he made on Twitter once the split-up was announced. This LA rapper Saweetie released 7 tracks of something that will keep the pretty girl summer satisfied.
The first song features DrakeO The Ruler who just finished his long-awaited stint in prison, and DrakeO has been on his takeover shit since he was released. This song shows you why her rap pen should be respected with bars like

“I’m Mrs. Untouchable, I’m like a Lunchablе, Play like it’s all fun and games ’til I’m done with you, Somеone approachable, I’m unfuckwittable, Bitches is all talk, this ain’t no interview”.
The pen of the female rap era we are in is impressive. The following song is “Baby Mama Coochie” by BbyAfrika featuring Saweetie. If I’m filling this album correctly it seems to be Saweetie’s version of the artist she has signed or just wants to showcase with her imprint. This song is nothing short of what the title is about, a baby momma with some fire WAP pretty much. BbyAfrika and Saweetie layer some slick talkin bad bitch bars if that is politically okay to say. I felt like I was listening to artists who are inspired by Foxy and Kim heavily. Saweetie sure did pick a great set of artists to create a great playlist project to surround herself with. We have “See-Saw” after that which is just Kendra Jae harmonizing her beautiful voice all over this great track. I appreciate a nice and some good R&B toxicity as I get older. So this song happens to be my favorite. Follow up song is an ode to Soulja boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” which is respectable because she put her pretty girl swag on it and she gave us
“You got a finsta bitch, you be lurkin’,
Prettiest out here, that shit for certain, Never met a boss like me, no Winner with the game, no cheat codes, Wrist so cold, need a peacoat, Ballin’ on a ho, that’s a free throw” (Pretty & Rich)
Back Seat” Feat Loudiz is probably my least favorite song on the project just not for me but I’m sure women will love it that love Saweetie. It seems like she kept it true to her city and featured California artists only. Next, we have “Talkin’ Bout” which isn’t for me either, and if I’m listening to it right, it sounds like it used some SouljaBoy music as well. The very last song she gave us “Sweat Check” is a very Hot Girl/Pretty Girl Turn Up Summer Music and I love seeing women having this much fun with music. Meg and Saweetie are what a lot of people wanted for Nicki & Cardi but with a New Yorker’s ego and label madness mixed in, it got in the way. Saweetie and her team did a great job with this project. Check out her music on YouTube where it’s a visual album but it’s a yearbook with all the artist pictures. 2/5 this is a short project so it is a little harder to judge on an album scale but I’m not part of her core audience just a fan of the culture.

Toymaker Hasbro Selling EOne Music & Death Row Records For $385M

Famous toymaker Hasbro made headlines in late 2019 with the purchase of Entertainment One, and subsequently taking control of iconic West Coast label Death Row Records, the former home of 2Pac Shakur, Dr. DreTha Dogg Pound, and Snoop Dogg.

Now, per a Deadline report, Death Row Records, including additional artists and properties under eOne Music, are on the move once again, with the report stating that Hasbro will be selling eOne Music to the equity firm Blackstone for a $385 million cash deal.

“This transaction will ensure that eOne Music is well positioned to unlock great opportunities for its many talented artists and partners, as Hasbro continues to focus on the core strategic elements of … play and entertainment,” said Brian Goldner, CEO of the Pawtucket, RI-based Hasbro.

In recent months, Death Row Records consultant John Payne has touted upcoming vaulted music releases, working with former Death Row Records inmates like DazKuruptLady Of RageRBX and others.

At the time of this writing, there’s been no word on how this impacts the legendary west coast label and its infamously vaulted music.

Just give them a good moment for Dave Chappelle. And he’s said that he’s done the same for me in return.”

Two For Real 2 by Kalan.Frfr

We have not received a great all-around true LA-sounding album in a while, but I will say this the LA music since Victory Lap has had no problem with being consistent with putting out quality music for the city. Why I enjoy this TwolForeal2 project and believe it’s a dope project all true LA natives should praise together, It will be broken down in my album review style of HOME, CAR, and EARPHONE vibes. Sometimes I’ll bring in something different for my reviews with a vinyl review because I believe that alone gives you a different experience with the quality of the vinyl.
Kalan.FrFr is born in Carson but a native of Compton as well which he never stops to remind you of his background with his tone or beat choice. This album which was released on Roc Nation which is a gift right there, honestly feel like most of this was recorded pre-deal because it was released a month or less after the deal was announced.
I’ve played this album in all my review settings and Home truly is where I enjoyed it the most. The project just sounds great on my loud subs or when I play it on tv. Especially enjoyed it in my car in the city of LA course it sounds great. When I see my girl get ready to the music or me enjoying it while I smoke to relax in my home or just getting some things done, those are signs of a great project to me. This 13 track album was packed with great songs for the summer and if things start to open up this summer in LA then this album should have no problem picking back up when it comes to radio play or just hearing it in the city.
We have a rapper that has chosen to use autotune vocal pitch to the core of this project and he isn’t shying away from using this device to not only harmonize sweet toxic bars to our beloved queens but rap bars for his niggas. Kalan will give us honest lyrics as well
“We do what we do to make it through (To make it through)
Star up in my hood, I made the news (I made the news)
They set up a system so we lose (We lose)
Everything I got, a nigga die for (Yeah-yeah)
Everything I wanted, I did time for (Uh)
News don’t never tell the whole truth, what they gotta lie for? (They gotta lie for?)”
which was from “I Gotta Know”, and he can also give you something for the summer IG captions or a post like this
“Yeah, cut it out with all that back-talk, you too sassy
But I like that shit, that shit turn me on” or “Yeah, she love my Boosie fade, she stay calling it a taper, though“ (“Tidal Wave”)
which was from one of the top 3 songs I enjoyed the most on this project I honestly play this just about every day.
LA truly is in good hands with Bino, Mozzy, Dom Kennedy, Boogie, Problem, Bluebucks, AZ Chile, SixSev, Hitboy, DJ Dahi, DJ Khalil, P-Lo and so many more making it known that we have a sound that will not be denied ever.
I believe KalanFrFr album would have had a bigger hit if the city was open and he could have capitalized off of hearing this album when it dropped in LA, it would have been a movie. This project and Sham1016’s “Everybody’s Enemy” which had some heat with “Don’t wait too long” and “Internet Bangers” with the LA MC AirPlane James who also has no problem representing the city the right way.
What I appreciate from rappers today who are putting out hot R&B/Rap records like “Never Lose You” or Airplane James “Righteous” is I believe that part was missing from our music in LA. We love to be toxic and champion the Too $hort side of the coin but we also got some real love for our women. If not we always have Brent Faiyaz right.
While running through this album numerous times before writing about it, I would honestly say although the rating I give it is right in the middle perse 3/5, I still believe this album will be talked about for some time. I’ve added a few songs to my favorite playlist for all settings even while I’m at work. “No Love” gets played every day, “Runaway” is perfect when I’m with my girlfriend, and “I Gotta Know” along with my first two favorite tracks “Scoring” & “No Love” is perfect for when I smoke. This new wave of LA artists has honestly kept me very intrigued, and I believe a lot of people are still missing out on what’s taking place. Some of my current favorites are G Perico, Wray Charles, 1TakeJay, Remble, Vonnie D, Rucci, and DrakeO of course. Last but not least leave you with the line that truly got me into Kalan and made me dig deep into his catalog.
“How you gon’ judge me when you not perfect?, All my Ls turned to Ws, all worth it (All worth it)” (Scoring) – Kalan Frfr

Couch Lock Network Presents: 4/20 SF Comedy Special

This year 420, started at 4:30 am because I had to be at work at 5:30 am to get the guys out on the road for their deliveries for the day. So with a gradual pick up to get my day going, I was able to get some orders packed for the following day’s delivery and fit in a nice session with my coworker of a joint I rolled and a puff co device with some fire concentrate he contributed. So it’s safe to say this holiday for people like us that don’t celebrate to the fullest like we used to, truly started as a great day.
Today I will be covering THE COUCH LOCKED network event by Berner. This event will be presented by Berner the owner of Cookies and numerous other ventures. He has set up an event that will be hosted by comedians Michael Blackson (Comic View, Next Friday) and Paul Rodriguez Sr. (Ali, Proud Family). It will kick off at 4:00 pm with Cipha Sounds, 4:40 pm Teddy Ray, 5:10 pm Precious Hall, 5:50 pm Bob Saget, 6:20 pm Jeff Ross, and ending with the great comedian Lil Duval.
This event took place in San Francisco of course which is the perfect place to have an event at if not Los Angeles or Colorado especially if it’s surrounded by marijuana. Jeff Ross and Lil Duval are highly respected comedians so I’m excited to see what they talk about. Today I set myself up with some Seth Rogen HousePlant product. I used a delivery service, and it had a very high delivery fee so I will not shout them out nor will I speak about them by name. The strain I’m enjoying while watching this event is RainBand by HousePlant, which is a cross of Triangle Kush x Animal Mints and after the first joint I’ll say it hits and the nose matches the high. It’s a strain I would try again without that high delivery fee on top of the price of 3.5 grams which goes pretty fast for OG stoners.
Couch Locked cost about $30 a day of the event, $28 with 420 discount, and was a $25 presale which I should have jumped on but wasn’t sure on how long the workday would go. Cipha sounds kicked it off with Cypress Hills I Like To Get High which is in most stoners’ top ten weed songs. Cipha sounds had a decent set before the show kicked off.
Teddy Ray LA native was the first comedian to hit the stage who did a great job especially when he kept bringing up the fact he was smoking some cookie strain from Berner that had him too faded but ended his set with his weed version of Erykah Badu’s “Back In The Day”. Precious Hall (All Def Digital Comedian) was a decent follow-up that did not have too many jokes that made the audience laugh. Snoop Dogg and his cannabis brand Doggy Bag also received some love when there was a brief commercial. The third comedian was cipha sounds who also served as the night’s DJ and to be honest Cipha was not bad at all and I wouldn’t mind seeing him do his own set in New York. PAUL Rodriguez did a great job of filling in. Bob Saget opened great with San Francisco jokes that got everyone’s attention. “Wake Up San Francisco” a line from Family Matters and the line “I’m going to put a shoebox on my lap and give you guys a show” which Bob Saget said only hat line was because the crowd wasn’t as interactive or laughing because most of them were stoned. Bob Saget had an amazing set that he ended with one of his musical comedy songs. Jeff Ross King of Roasting, people have crowned him as, since his show Celebrity Roast on Comedy Central. Jeff Ross set was noteworthy especially when he asked the crowd if they were up to be speed roasted. Lil Duval did what he does best to feel out the crowd and do his set that fits what’s in front of him. It wasn’t his best nor was it trash but it was great for a first one back since lockdown first happened last year.
I would have liked to have had attended the event but towards the back, because it seemed like it was more people than necessary. I’m sure it was a great time but I enjoyed being at home eating, smoking, and laughing to high moments while watching this Couch Lock Network event by Berner. Can’t wait for the LA event he hopefully makes happen this year or the following.

Glenn Close Steals the Show at the Oscars with “Da Butt”

During Sunday’s Oscars broadcast, one of the highlights was a trivia portion where actress Glenn Close put her knowledge of the music in Spike Lee’s School Daze (1988) on full display. When asked about the song “Da Butt,” she quickly identified the record itself and its performers as the go-go/funk band known as E.U. Additionally, she shouted out the lead singer and bassist, Gregory “Sugar Bear” Elliot, and even demonstrated its accompanying dance.

Given that the movie takes place in Atlanta, E.U. is from D.C., and the Oscars are the epitome of Hollywood and Los Angeles, it is proof of how far music can go and just how timeless and universal it can be.

“Da Butt” topped the Billboard R&B charts not long after its release and would later go on to be sampled in records from L.L. Cool J (“Big Ole Butt”) and Wale (“Clappers”).

Um, in 04 I toured with Murs & Living Legends on the 04 Definitive Jux states & Canada tour, with the Perceptionists, C-Rayz Walz, and DJ RJD2. Over two months of straight dates, rarely a day off per week, 5 seperate groups on one tour bus! One hotel room per city for showers. It was brutal.

I went as Murs’s music conductor/DJ/live keyboardist. Most fun I’ve had on the road in years! At the end of the tour we went in the studio with the Perceptionists and recorded “Career Finders” for their Black Dialogue album.

Later that same year I went in the studio with Pacs adopted little brothers’ group.. The Havenotz and we recorded “And 2morrow” for the Tupac poetry album “Rose From Concrete; Volume 2”. Though they included the song, our version, with our production & mix, didn’t get used. It’s a beast of a recording though, and I’m hopefully gonna include it on my next compilation/best-of-as-producer album entitled “Shockwaves”, up next for release with Jake Records.

In 05 I visited Australia for the first time, on a 3-week tour with digital underground. Bloody awesome experience. Recorded a song with Brisbane Australian artists Soma Rasa while there. Played a huge outdoor festival with Kool Keith in Sydney. Attended the ’05 Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Also had a few “loggas wit the mites!” (..”lagers with the mates”)

In 06 I began collecting ideas and fragments for this latest d.u. album. It began with the live recording of the Frisco DNA show from a year earlier.

With digital underground I’ve spent atleast 4 months of each year touring, every year since 1996, over a thousand shows.

In between all that touring, I’ve been studying yoga, world history, and vegetarianism, and have been enjoying a beautiful home life in the hills of Topanga California, in a place that Afeni Shakur lent me the money to move into. The “Cherry Flava’d Email” I speak of on “Fear of a Mixed Planet” was the reply letter from her, letting me know “yes, I will help you”.

Thank you Afeni, I just don’t know how I would of kept my sanety through all this if it wasn’t for this little place in the mountains you made possible for me. Topangas good energy helped me get my focus, and re-connect to who I was before digital underground.

I grew up in the country mostly. I was the type of kid who swam in rivers & lakes, and who caught snakes & alligators with my bare hands. My dad’s got pictures of all that stuff, like me holding up six-feet rattlesnakes that I had just caught minutes before..

2). Although a solid effort, the project failed commercially?? Why do you feel it didn’t do as well as expected??

It did better than I expected! Ha, I didn’t think people were gonna get it at all. I was just lettin off steam, and expressing myself beyond the party-mentality of the average d.u. record.

I do love the digital underground scene, I always say we’re like the “Porkys” of hip-hop, like a non-stop musical college dorm party. But I had other things I wanted to share and “Mixed Planet” let me get some of that off my chest.

I was shocked by some of the responses to it. DJ Quick ran up to Money-B in LA somewhere and said “Shocks album is the shit! I bought 2 copies! I had ta give one to my cousin for his birthday!”

Every review has been generous so far. And we always hear it on the college stations and KPFAs of the world. And London & France are all over it, friends occasionally hit me from Paris to say they just heard Cinnamon Waves again on the air or at a party somewhere.

It wasn’t really a commercial album, what song could’ve possibly been marketed as a “commercial” single? It’s purpose, for me anyways, was to restore some balance in my musical output, and to do some songs for those friends & fans who know me beyond the Humpty & digital underground personas. Humpty, and Shock-G too really, are just two of many characters & roles I play in the studio. D.U. is just one project in a long life of jazz, blues, funk, rock, hi-energy, party rap, and political hip-hop, thru Pac, P-Funk, and other artists. There’s so much more to life for a musician than just one band, one genre, one radio station.

3). You are finally about to drop D.U.’s long overdue, eighth (counting This is an EP Release & The Lost Files), and LAST studio set, ..Cuz A D.U. Party Don’t Stop! — Why did you opt to title the record this??

I got that from the live shows, Money-B gets the crowd to shout that back at us.. “cuz a d.u. party don’t stop!!”

Plus that phrase kinda reflects our reality over the past 20 years, a nonstop party mayne!!

a). For someone who hasn’t heard it yet, what would you tell that person can be expected?? Are there any highlights; i.e., cameo appearances, favorite tracks, producers, etcetera??

It’s like a reunion album. Ya gotta hear it to appreciate it. We even brought back Ted Casey & Bill Thompson from Sex Packets; they were the TV hosts on “Gutfest 89”.

And it also showcases all the new rappers & producers we’ve recruited from the last few years of our travels.

The most hilarious performance on the album is a verse from newcomer emcee “BINC”, which is an acronym for “Best in Northern Cali”.

Ha ha, he ain’t short on ego.

And my cousin “ButtaFly” said some outrageous shit too! We used it as the intro.

b). Why did you actually decide to incorporate “LIVE” tracks on the CD??

Um, many reasons, but it just seemed like time.

One reason is, we finally came across a good, stereophonic, soundboard recording of a show, rather than the usual camcorder versions we have so many of. This bay area show, you can hear the hometown luv in the air, and both the audience and the band was in rare form. We didn’t bother to include the songs inwhich we simply rapped over the records, I figured we all know how those records sound already. No, instead we put the “unplugged” sections on the album inwhich Eric “Kenya” Baker (So Many Tears) is on guitar, DJ-NuStylez is on the turns, Juan Carlos (Sons of the P) is on percussion, and I’m at my favorite place, on piano, while the entire d.u. roster blesses the mic. All the spin-off acts were in the building too that night; Luniz, Saafir, Element, Choice Cutz, even Strictly Dope.. Tupacs’ original group b4 he joined digital underground.

 That’s reason one.

Reason two is because these last 10 years I speak of, since the “Gravy” album, we’ve been touring constantly, worldwide, and that time on the road, it sorta seasoned us. Our live show has evolved much tighter, we finally got the years of dues that we weren’t able to get before blowing up so quickly and gettin thrown out there before Public Enemy.

Plus we recruited alot of good emcees along the way too. This album reflects that growth and showcases those emcees.

And there’s a third reason..

Reason three for all the live-show inclusions is because few Pac fans know that our clik wrote the music to practically all of Tupacs singles during his first 3 albums. For instance, So Many Tears was Eric Baker & I musically, I Get Around was myself, Homies Call & Brendas Got a Baby was our homie Deon Evans a.k.a. Big-D the Impossible. In a sense, we were Tupacs in-house band, and I was even appointed by him to be his music director on his up & coming overseas tour in the fall of 1996. Of course the tour never happened, but you could say this album is a taste of what it might’ve been like musically, because these are the cats that would’ve been there with us. And though Pac passed on, we atleast have Ray Luv (of Strictly Dope and early ghost writer for Tupac) and Pacs’ protege` Mac Mall representing in Pacs honor. Plus they supplied me a 77-key Fender Rhodes electric piano that night, so I was in heaven.

4). How do you feel that this new project measures up to that of your previous releases?? And, how would you say it either differs and/or compares to those other group projects??

It’s more raw because it’s mostly a live album. Can’t have re-dos & second takes when it’s live, so it is what it is, ya smell me? ..mistakes n all.

a). Is this really Digital Underground’s FINAL, FINAL record?? If this deems true, tell me how come??

What better time than our 20-year anniversary? We signed our first recording contract as d.u. in 1988. Can’t do it 4eva, I gave it 20 loyal years, I’m done with it.

We simply have outgrown it, myself, Money-B, and even Humpty!

ha ha

b). What exactly are your “post D.U.” plans??

I’m writing my Tupac book, finally. The real story about all his firsts. I’ve spent more time with Pac then anyone else in the industry besides his best friend Big Stretch. (Randy Walker, R.I.P.) I introduced those two to each other. Pac used ta sleep on my couch when he was 19, and did 4 major states & overseas tours w/us including the Japan d.u./Queen Latifah tour. I produced him through over 20 studio sessions. To give u an example of how much I have to share, he was on Deathrow Records for 9 months; he was on our label TNT for 5 years, and in digital underground for 3 of those years. I was with Pac for many of his “first-time ever” experiences. We got him his first apartment, helped him buy his first car, tag-teamed with him on many of his first groupie experiences, etc.

I got all the juicy stories.

5). Let’s take it back to your beginning…Tell me your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested?? And, how did it all begin for Shock G??

“Gregory, come sing Stevie Wonder for everybody” my mom would shout at me from the living room. I’d walk out and do “Uptight” for all the adults, take a spin, and then dip back into the bedroom to finish playing with my brother when I was 5 years old. This was in Poughkeepsie upstate NY.

By age eleven I was playing drums in neighborhood bands around Tampa Florida where my dad moved the family after a job promotion. The first band was called the Knollwood Specials, named after our street in River Grove Tampa. River Grove was an inter-racial experimental neighborhood, one of the first in the US, where they brought in families of every different race. We used to play “Don’t Call me Nigger” by Sly & the Family Stone and “Chameleon” by Herbie Hancock & Headhunters.
My second band was called “Parliament 2”, and all we did was cover P-Funk songs. With this band I scored the 1978 “Most Talented” trophy at Grecco Jr. High with a siiiick performance of “Flashlight” in the school talent show.
Then my mom left my dad and took me & my younger brother back to NYC with her and I got completely into hip-hop. Traded my drums in for 2 turntables & a mixer, and began DJing for rappers, during the wave of the first emcees in the world, New York City circa 77 thru 81. This was the birth of hip-hop. (DJ Afrika Bambaata, DJ Hollywood, and Grand Master Flash go back even slightly further then that.)

It was during this time that my cousin Sean Trone (“Shah-T” of the group “No-Face”) told me that my rap name “MC Starchild” was wack, and that I should be “Shah-G, cause your name is Greg”. I misunderstood him and thought he said “Shock”-G and wrote a few raps that way, and it stuck. Later he clarified that he had said “Shah” which is Arabic for “King”, hence his name “Shah-T”.

But I thought he said “Shock” cause in Queens the “shock” prefix was as popular as the “grandmaster” prefix was in the Bronx. My favorite Queens rapper back then was called “Shock-Dell” for instance.

Then pops got custody, and I found myself living back in Tampa again, but no band this time, now it was the “Master Blasters”, our mobile DJ crew of 3 emcees and 2 DJs; myself, DJ Flame from the Bronx, DJ Cush from Harlem, MC Ronnie Ron from Newark New Jersey, and MC K-Bar from Brooklyn. We all had families that had recently moved to Florida, we all found each other at jams & record stores in search of hip-hop, which hadn’t reached florida yet besides us. Rap was so unknown in florida at the time that when Rappers Delight came out everyone at Chamberlain high-school ran up to me and said “Greg! You made a record!! We heard you on the radio!!” ..but it was Sugarhill Gang of course.

As the Master Blasters, we blazed the Tampa Bay area for the next 3 years or so, including several outdoor jams at Riverfront Park on Sundays, which was the jam-packed crowd gathering area every weekend.  Soon the Master Blasters were ghetto-famous in Tampa, which landed me a slot on WTMP R&B/soul radio, in which I was the youngest on-air DJ in the state of Florida that year, 1981. My on-air personality was called “Rackadelic” which was also my graff name when I tagged trains & schoolyards or whatever. My birthname wasn’t “Jacobs”, (Jacobs is my moms maiden name) the birthname is Gregory Racker. From being such a P-Funk fan, and from telling everyone at school about the Funkadelic concerts, the other kids started calling me Rackadelic.
When I finally got fired from WTMP, it was for playing the 15 minute “Not Just Knee Deep” by Funkadelic in a 4-minute time slot, causing me to miss the station I.D. at the top of the hour and the news brief that was supposed to follow.   Ha ha, always representin George!

At 18 I gave up DJing to teach myself piano, this wonderful instrument that I suddenly became mesmorized by. (more like hypnotized!) For the next 3 years I literally walked around in a fog, always practicing scales & chord progressions in my head when I was away from the piano. Most people who knew me at this time, including my family, all believed I was losing my mind because I lived in this other world, and disconnected from virtually everything besides piano music. Between the ages of 18 and 21 I wouldn’t even date a girl unless she had a piano. It usually went like this; I’d be the last person at a house party somewhere, still playing the piano at 3 in the morning, when sometimes the girl who lived there would be charmed by the music and would let me spend the night. Then from that night on we’d become a couple and I’d move in with her for a few months. Until eventually she’d realize that she was number 2 to the piano, and would get tired of me ignoring her and playing so much, afterwhich I’d be off to meet the next girl. This is how I spent my college years, alternating living at home with my dad sometimes too. My family got me a piano for my birthday to keep me home, but I guess it didn’t work, cause soon afterwards I fell inlove with a model/actress named Davida and we dropped out of college & eloped to California in 1985.

We first landed in LA, where I played keys for a funk band called Onyx. I quit Onyx cause the lead singer literally thought he was Prince. Afterwards, we moved to Oakland and I formed a hip-hop crew called the “Spice Regime”. As Spice Regime I recorded Underwater Rimes for Tabu records in 1987. It was Tabu who said.. “We like the music, but u need a better name” and that’s when Jimi & I put the 2 words digital underground together.

Evidence Announces New Album ‘Unlearning Vol. 1’; New Music Video “Better You” Out Now

(April 23, 2021 — Los Angeles, CA)
Today, one of underground Hip-Hop’s most enduring artists, Evidence, announced his new album, Unlearning Vol. 1, is set for release on June 25 via Rhymesayers Entertainment. The announcement comes alongside the release of lead single “Better You,” produced by The Alchemist. Known for his consistently creative approach to visuals, Evidence unveiled the track yesterday when he surprised fans with an early pre-release of the official “Better You” music video. The dramatic video, shot and directed by Stephen Vanasco, reveals a starkly contrasted black & white setting, accented by reflective elements throughout – visuals that complement the interplay between the track’s darkly sinister drums and Ev’s sanguine, reflective lyrics. The imaginative visual concepts also carry throughout the cover art for Unlearning Vol. 1, where a jigsaw collage shows multiple forms of Evidence in his many phases of creation, envisioned and meticulously assembled by renowned artist/designer Brent Rollins.

Evidence’s last solo album, Weather Or Not, was critically and commercially acclaimed, drawing attention from Billboard, Pitchfork, DJ Booth, and more, as well as being voted 2018’s best album of the year by readers on Ambrosia For Heads. Following the release, in interviews with No Jumper and DJ Booth, Evidence offered insight into his mindset transitioning from Weather Or Not into the writing and recording of what would become Unlearning Vol. 1. “I don’t feel like I’m Evidence, the character. I feel like I’m me,” he revealed to DJ Booth, adding “I don’t mind evolving publicly.”

Unlearning Vol. 1 pairs Evidence’s own production with The Alchemist, Nottz, Sebb Bash, Animoss, Mr. Green, V Don, Daringer, Khrysis and EARDRUM (QThree), highlighting perhaps an undervalued skill of Ev’s—his ability to collaborate with a multitude of producers while still creating an album with a cohesion and consistency rarely found in such extensive collaboration. While the album’s musical soundscape sets the scene, it’s Ev’s gift for relatable yet inventively clever writing that really paints the picture. That said, a small but powerful cast of guest appearances also decorate the landscape, courtesy of stellar performances from Boldy James, Conway The Machine, Fly Anakin, Navy Blue, and Murkage Dave.

For Unlearning Vol. 1, Evidence embraced pure artistic expression, fully immersing himself in the creative process. The result is a fourteen-track effort that pulls inspiration from Evidence’s surroundings and collaborators while remaining undeniably true to his foundation.

Mt. Westmore Is “Checc’in” With New Sneak-Peek Video

In new Instagram post on the Mt. Westmore group page, Snoop Dogg is seen in the studio rapping to and listening to a song snippet presumably entitled “Checc’in”.

During the video snippet, Snoop is seen rapping along to the end of his verse, before Ice Cube‘s comes on and raps: “I touch down and I’m gettin’ my folks/we in town homie at the airport/I’m in your city just to get c-notes/I’m not alone, boy, I’m with the goats/40 Water, Snoop and Too Short/for anybody wanting to smoke/you don’t want it, but you gon’ get it/cuz nowadays everybody’s a critic..”

It’s unknown who produced the record, but with what we’ve heard in the last few months coming out about the Ice Cube, Too ShortE-40, and Snoop Dogg supergroup album, it’s shaping up to be incredible!

WCS A&R Spotlight; On the come up, Lj Savvy drops a new visual “TSFIL” looks to kick off Savvy Summer

Pomona native Lj Savvy has been crafting a sound a bit different from what is popular today. The multi-talented musician, engineer, artist...
