Two For Real 2 by Kalan.Frfr

We have not received a great all-around true LA-sounding album in a while, but I will say this the LA music since Victory Lap has had no problem with being consistent with putting out quality music for the city. Why I enjoy this TwolForeal2 project and believe it’s a dope project all true LA natives should praise together, It will be broken down in my album review style of HOME, CAR, and EARPHONE vibes. Sometimes I’ll bring in something different for my reviews with a vinyl review because I believe that alone gives you a different experience with the quality of the vinyl.
Kalan.FrFr is born in Carson but a native of Compton as well which he never stops to remind you of his background with his tone or beat choice. This album which was released on Roc Nation which is a gift right there, honestly feel like most of this was recorded pre-deal because it was released a month or less after the deal was announced.
I’ve played this album in all my review settings and Home truly is where I enjoyed it the most. The project just sounds great on my loud subs or when I play it on tv. Especially enjoyed it in my car in the city of LA course it sounds great. When I see my girl get ready to the music or me enjoying it while I smoke to relax in my home or just getting some things done, those are signs of a great project to me. This 13 track album was packed with great songs for the summer and if things start to open up this summer in LA then this album should have no problem picking back up when it comes to radio play or just hearing it in the city.
We have a rapper that has chosen to use autotune vocal pitch to the core of this project and he isn’t shying away from using this device to not only harmonize sweet toxic bars to our beloved queens but rap bars for his niggas. Kalan will give us honest lyrics as well
“We do what we do to make it through (To make it through)
Star up in my hood, I made the news (I made the news)
They set up a system so we lose (We lose)
Everything I got, a nigga die for (Yeah-yeah)
Everything I wanted, I did time for (Uh)
News don’t never tell the whole truth, what they gotta lie for? (They gotta lie for?)”
which was from “I Gotta Know”, and he can also give you something for the summer IG captions or a post like this
“Yeah, cut it out with all that back-talk, you too sassy
But I like that shit, that shit turn me on” or “Yeah, she love my Boosie fade, she stay calling it a taper, though“ (“Tidal Wave”)
which was from one of the top 3 songs I enjoyed the most on this project I honestly play this just about every day.
LA truly is in good hands with Bino, Mozzy, Dom Kennedy, Boogie, Problem, Bluebucks, AZ Chile, SixSev, Hitboy, DJ Dahi, DJ Khalil, P-Lo and so many more making it known that we have a sound that will not be denied ever.
I believe KalanFrFr album would have had a bigger hit if the city was open and he could have capitalized off of hearing this album when it dropped in LA, it would have been a movie. This project and Sham1016’s “Everybody’s Enemy” which had some heat with “Don’t wait too long” and “Internet Bangers” with the LA MC AirPlane James who also has no problem representing the city the right way.
What I appreciate from rappers today who are putting out hot R&B/Rap records like “Never Lose You” or Airplane James “Righteous” is I believe that part was missing from our music in LA. We love to be toxic and champion the Too $hort side of the coin but we also got some real love for our women. If not we always have Brent Faiyaz right.
While running through this album numerous times before writing about it, I would honestly say although the rating I give it is right in the middle perse 3/5, I still believe this album will be talked about for some time. I’ve added a few songs to my favorite playlist for all settings even while I’m at work. “No Love” gets played every day, “Runaway” is perfect when I’m with my girlfriend, and “I Gotta Know” along with my first two favorite tracks “Scoring” & “No Love” is perfect for when I smoke. This new wave of LA artists has honestly kept me very intrigued, and I believe a lot of people are still missing out on what’s taking place. Some of my current favorites are G Perico, Wray Charles, 1TakeJay, Remble, Vonnie D, Rucci, and DrakeO of course. Last but not least leave you with the line that truly got me into Kalan and made me dig deep into his catalog.
“How you gon’ judge me when you not perfect?, All my Ls turned to Ws, all worth it (All worth it)” (Scoring) – Kalan Frfr
