DJ Pooh Says That Tha Dogg Pound’s “New York, New York” Wasn’t a Diss Record

One song that always comes up when discussing Hip-Hop’s bi-coastal rivalry in the mid-’90s is Tha Dogg Pound’s “New York, New York.” However, in a recent tweet, the track’s producer, DJ Pooh, revealed that this record wasn’t a diss when Kurupt stepped in the booth. However, the masses interpreted it differently. Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jay-Z even commented on its controversial video in his classic, “Money, Cash, Hoes,” a few years later.  “It’s like New York been soft ever since Snoop came through and crushed the buildings / I’m trying to restore the feelings;  fuck the law, keeping dealing / More money, more cash, more chilling.

Red Rum of Bangin’ On Wax Passes Away

We just got the sad news that Jermaine “Red Rum” Carter of Bangin’ On Wax fame has passed away. The Inglewood rapper was a pioneer of Blood rappers that later became prevalent in the rap industry years later. Red Rum was also the cousin of hip-hop legend Kurupt and was briefly signed to the infamous Death Row Records in the early 90’s. Red Rum continued to record and appear on Damu Rydaz projects and was featured on songs with the likes of Kokane, Kam, B. Dot and many other West Coast acts. As the popularity of the Bloods rose throughout the country due in part to Blood rappers in the industry, Red Rum made it a point to visit states outside of California and go to the Blood hoods to make sure they have their protocols right. He also made it a point to teach an anti-violence message amongst gangs and Black men. Recently, Red Rum had silently battled cancer and unfortunately succumbed to it. I had the honor of interviewing him for Raptalk back in 2007 and I remember him to be a cool person. From time to time we would interact on Facebook and Instagram. Our condolences goes out to his family, friends and associates.

RIP Jermaine “Red Rum” Carter

WCS Exclusive: Greg Mack of 1580 KDAY talks Eazy-E & Dr. Dre, The Mix Masters, The Formation of Hip-Hop Radio & More!

WCS gets those hard to get exclusives. Today we bring you Greg Mack, the legendary former programmer for 1580 KDAY AM. The station was responsible for breaking every act on the West Coast during it’s run including Eazy-E’s “Boyz N The Hood” in which Greg tells the story in this interview. KDAY is important to hip-hop history since it was the first station in the country to adopt what is now known as the “rhythmic format”. It was a combination of hip-hop, r & b, and freestyle which was a direct reflection of the streets. Rap artists from East to West Coast were introduced and given a platform. Greg adopted an open door policy meaning that artists could drop off their music to the station and if he liked it, he would play it on the air, something that is unheard of in today’s radio industry. Check out this interview and learn more about the legend of Greg Mack and 1580 KDAY.

God Over Money’s Bizzle, returns with a new visual “Monster”

For over a decade Bizzle has been pushing, carrying a message forward. Holding a torch for a sub-genre that often goes over looked. Yes, there have been moments of progress, and achievements. But the true goal of Christian Hip Hop, or CHH as it is affectionately called by its supporters, and artists within the genre. Is to spread the Gospel of Jesus to the masses.

A challenge in a world that is fallen, but one Bizzle and the God Over Money camp have never shied away from. It’s safe to say, in fact, that this independent label has stood firm over time. Consistent in their calling, to be the label, and team that continue what was started here on the West Coast, in the early 80’s.

Bizzle popped up on the national scene in 2010, when a freestyle he did, which was aimed at artist such as Jay-Z and Rick Ross, but mainly the moral compass of  “secular Hip Hop” in general started to gain attention. Not only by CHH supporters, but Hip Hop listeners, who were shocked by this, at the time, unknown artist challenging Hip Hop’s elite.

Bizzle and God Over Money, would go on to drop mixtapes and albums, that would be the soundtrack to many Christian Youth and Young adults lives throughout the 2010’s going into 2020.

It’s good to see this artist and his label mates remain and cut through, where a lot of others have made the choice or attempt, to make moves that may look as though they are wavering, or compromising in their music, and possibly their faith. Bizzle, has publicly stood firm, as a Christian, husband, father, and artist.

Check this new video out!

Snoop Dogg Talks New Def Jam Role, “The Algorithm” Album, Losing His Mother, Eminem, Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, Dr. Dre, Brotherhood + More On The Breakfast Club Interview

Snoop Dogg was the guest on The Breakfast Club, on today’s (October 27) episode and spoke with Charlamagne Tha God and Angela Yee about his new role as Executive Creative And Strategic Consultant to the iconic music label Def Jam, the very recent loss of his mother, squashing the beef with Eminem, performing in the upcoming Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show with Dr. Dre, and so much more!

On squashing the beef with Eminem, the Long Beach icon had this to say: “Man, I love Eminem!” he said. “The thing is that we love Hip Hop so much, we competitive, we battle rappers, so that was supposed to trigger that in him. But we brothers and we family so we learned to appreciate each other for what we do and how we get down, and we had a long conversation about the respect that we have for each other and the way we need to talk in public about each other. I felt like I was out of pocket. I apologized to him and I let him know that I’m just bettering myself. I make mistakes, I ain’t perfect, I’m Snoop Dogg.”

At around the 14:30 mark, Snoop Dogg discusses the upcoming Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show and performing alongside his long-time collaborator Dr. Dre, Mary J. BligeKendrick Lamar, and Eminem, and said, “Dr. Dre is one of my closest associates. So when I knew he got the call, I was figuring that I was gonna get a call soon. But to add Eminem, Kendrick, and Mary J. Blige is like, special. Because it’s like, this is his super friends, and this is his Super Bowl moment to actually show people why he is who he is. It’s hard to explain his method to the madness. But when you look at everybody that he touched, look at our careers, look at how successful we are, without him. A lot of people can’t make it without the person that put them in. We’ve done just fine without him. And we still maintain that relationship with him. So the Super Bowl performance should be something special because I know he really wants to give the people what they want. This is an L.A. moment, and Dr. Dre is a West Coast guy.”

WCS Exclusive: Stormy Daniels Interview

Stormy Daniels is a name that will often be associated with former President Donald Trump in the eyes of many because of how “the worst 90 seconds of (her) life” created a media firestorm when it came to light that she had a sexual rendezvous with him in 2006. In January 2018, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s lawyer at the time, Michael Cohen, had paid Stormy Daniels, an adult film star, $130,000 just before the 2016 Presidential Election to keep quiet about what had happened a decade earlier at Lake Tahoe.

However, Ms. Daniels refuses to let one moment, despite everything that followed because of it, define her in a career filled with many others that highlight the joys of health, happiness, and sex.

And so, in an exclusive interview with West Coast Styles, Stormy talks to me about, among other things [including being annoyed by constantly getting asked about Trump’s dick], her new CBD line, the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, her passion for writing, and sharing the stage with YG.

Regardless of how one feels about pornography or whichever side of the political aisle they may sit, Stormy’s story is one of empowerment, courage, and resilience. What started as a few questions about cannabis culture evolved into a fun exchange covering many topics.

HDBeenDope & Earl On The Beat Prep “Side A: The Preface” & New Video “Hold It Down” Ft. Landstrip Chip

Today October 22), Brooklyn hip-hop artist HDBeenDope and multi-platinum producer, Earl On The Beat announced the release of their forthcoming joint project Side A: The Preface, which includes collaborations with Roc Nation artist Maeta and Landstrip Chip.

In support of the release, HD also dropped a brand-new music video for “Hold It Down” featuring Landstrip Chip. Directed by HDBeenDope, the video story tells the theme of “holding it down” through luxurious shopping expeditions with a group of leading ladies before venturing down a boulevard with the top down. The music video closes with colorful visuals, scenic sunset balcony views, blended with a sweet moment between HD and his love interest.

“This project was about getting uncomfortable,” said HDBeenDope. “L.A.B.B. (Learn And Become Better) is the motto, which is ultimately about growth. It’s in play in my everyday life and especially with this project. Locking in with a producer was different as I’m used to doing everything myself. Earl’s sonics forced me outside of my normal approach to making music and I thank him for that.”

The highly-anticipated project features the previously released standout single “ReallyMite,” which HD recently performed on VEVO CTRL Live Session. The release of Side A: The Preface serves as the beginning of a momentous month for HD, chock-full of marquee performances on some of the biggest stages across the country, like Rolling Loud New York slated for the end of October. HD’s highly-anticipated live performance later this month marks the rapper’s latest milestone act since wrapping up his sweeping college tour covering Richmond University, The College of New Jersey, Denison University, The College of Wooster, and many more.

“HD is really talented and we have similar working styles which made it easy for us to collab,” said Earl On The Beat.

Side A: The Preface is the multi-faceted powerhouse’s first release since he dropped his second project BrokeN Dreams in 2020, followed by the song “Top,” featured in Madden NFL 21. The project showcased his signature storytelling style while blending the classic, East Coast sound with a more minimalist trap approach. The project also featured appearances from Rodes Rollins, Mayila and Maeta, as well as the fan-favorite single “Die With Me,” cultivating critical acclaim from HYPeBEAST, DJBooth, XXL and more.

Check out “Hold It Down” below:

Over the course of 2019, he released a series of one-off singles including “Cayman,” “Rev Run,” and the massive hit “BYRD,” a no-holds-barred trap-influenced song that’s earned over 23 million streams and views to date and also featured in Madden NFL 21.

Roc Nation’s Bobby Fishscale Teams Up With Mozzy & Ink For New Single “Own Eyes”

Today (October 22), Florida hip-hop artist Bobby Fishscale dropped his newest single, “Own Eyes” featuring Mozzy and Ink. The new track, which premiered on both BET Jams and BET Hip Hop, features nostalgic vocals from singer-songwriter Ink interlaced with Bobby’s swift bars woven into each verse.

The music video, directed by Ben Marc, blends visuals set in an abandoned warehouse, to a nicotine-laced living room, before panning in on a young mother spotted with her newborn. Fans are also swept up in captivating shots of each actor’s eyes as the music video transitions from scene to scene.

The “Own Eyes” track tells the stories of coming up from a troubled young adulthood. The track forces listeners to reflect on realities many underserved communities face that typically go unnoticed – from dealing with a mother’s visitation getting denied to splitting a meager meal just to stay fed.

“Own eyes, to me, means to not let others dictate your future,” says Bobby Fishscale. “See it with your own eyes.”

Own Eyes” falls on the heels of the Roc Nation artist’s recently released track and music video “Role Models” feat Kalan.FrFr, which similarly spotlights the deep inequities and challenges Black and Brown communities face every day, and tells the powerful story of transformative change role models can bring into the picture.

Check out the “Own Eyes” video below:

Hailing from Quincy, Florida, the rising rap music star has been committed to giving back to his community – from his recent visit to local Shank Middle School which culminated in massive school supply donations, to being honored by Mayor Ronte R. Harris himself with a Key to the City this summer. Bobby Fishscale’s growing legacy traverses beyond just the recording industry into entertainment and culture at large.

Fishscale started making waves with his track “Hov Flow,” which sampled Jay-Z and Eminem’s “Renegade” beat in 2019, which grabbed attention from popular hip-hop platforms and blogs. His debut mixtape – Big Fish – released that same year – stirred a bidding war among record labels that led to his eventual signing to Roc Nation.

The project was followed by his mixtape, Super Fishy in April 2020 as well as Da Relapse, a 15-track project that included features from Lunch Money, Lil Quez and Yeezy Walker. That same year, Fishscale released his documentary, A Day In The Bricks, giving the audience an in-depth look into the inspiration behind the Quincy native’s trap sound. His hustle and drive earned him the 2020 BMI R&B and Hip Hop Social Star Award, joining the likes of previous winners Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, Zendaya, Joey Bada$$, NLE Choppa and more. His last mixtape, Talapia, dropped in April 2021 and featured appearances from Bigga Rankin, Doe Boy and ATL Jacob.

Mount Westmore Drops Teaser Video For “Fuck You” (Prod. Fredwreck & Dem Jointz)

Yesterday (October 20) the big news was Snoop DoggToo ShortE-40, and Ice Cube dropping the official Mount Westmore single and video, “Big Subwoofer”, produced by Kato On The Track.

However, flying under the radar was another Jesse Wellens and Sam Macaroni-directed video the West Coast supergroup dropped. The teaser video, “Thank You”, which is produced by Dem Jointz and Fredwreck, is set in the same fictional outer space world as “Big Subwoofer”, the video opens with Snoop Dogg walking through a bar as an alien Jazz singer (Chris Brewer) and his alien perform on stage.

As he passes through the bar, complete with a three-breasted femail alien (Suzette James), Ice Cube can be seen chilling at corner table with a group of extraterrestrials. After Snoop shoots a drunk bar patron (Lou Ferrigno, Jr.), the scene shifts to Snoop flying his spacecraft and kicking his verse off, “Made a milli off the flow/now it’s time to re-invent it/I’m the soldier, and lieutenant..”

The Dogg lands on a planet and ends up shooting a menacing villain alien Orc (Ivan Djurovic), capping off the killing by saying, “Funky Dog head bitch!”

Too Short starts his verse off, “I’m her mentor, and her therapist/a gateway to a place she would never get/no way to see it without me/if I teach her the game, I’ma charge her a fee..”, before the scene closes out, and we pick up where “Big Subwoofer” begins.
