Today is a special day in Hip-Hop. On this day, thirty-five years ago, Ice-T released his debut album, Rhyme Pays. It is not only a collection of songs that introduced the world to “gangsta rap” before it was even a term but marked the arrival of one of Hip-Hop’s greatest storytellers.

West Coast Styles salutes Rhyme Pays and thanks all those involved with its creation for the trail it blazed and the standards it set, some of which very few other albums have matched even all these years later. Respect due.

Berner’s Cookies Brand Throws Summer Smokeout in LA

This past Friday in Los Angeles, Berner and his Cookies brand threw a massive Smokeout in Koreatown on Olympic. Featuring partner brands like Xzibit’s Napalm and Fidel, the Summer Smokeout was a great time that featured free products and goodie bags for the first 200 entrants.

With a line that stretched out about a quarter of a mile down the block, bending and turning corners, the crowd stayed positive despite some of the entrants getting there at 7:30 Am and waiting until 9 Pm to enter the event.

One of the coolest parts of the event was the hand-rolled blunts where Cookies had professional blunt rollers on deck hooking up partygoers with massive blunts stuffed with the Cookies flavored bud.  Using paintbrushes, blunt glue, a rolling tool, and a glass tip, this might have been the highest I’ve been in a while.

The event also featured DJ sets from Bootleg Kev, Printz, Mishaps, BigSyphe and Gargamel who kept the hits coming, and took the time to spin Xzibit records as the West Coast legend made an appearance for his Napalm brand.

We will definitely be following Cookies more closely after this event. We always knew they had high-quality rapper weed, but this truly proved their brand loyalty with the fans and consumers.

There was one SUPER-fan of the Cookies brand that we spoke to while we were at the party and he recently lost both of his parents over the past few years. Following the separate tragedies of losing his parents, he turned to Cookies weed for therapy and found light in the Cookies brand. His loyalty and patronage to Cookies stores have given him peace, hope, and resilience as he continues on without his loved ones. While he still mourns, he’s found solace in Berner’s weed and there’s something truly amazing in that story.

His story truly was a testament to the value derived from this brand – it goes well beyond just getting high and loaded on high-quality herbs. Cannabis truly is a mental health resource for so many and Cookies has proven it can be that crutch or that shoulder to cry on in times of need weed. Ice-T & Spike’s ‘Split Decision’ is a Must-Read

The incredible thing about Split Decision is it is many things all at once. It is a memoir, a cautionary tale, a story of redemption, an insight into the criminal justice system, and a way for two long-time friends to be honest with themselves in front of all who choose to hear their stories in this fantastic book.

Told from the perspectives of Tracy “Ice-T” Marrow and Alton “Spike” Pierce, Split Decision is about how two criminal partners made different decisions that ultimately changed their lives and forever affected themselves and everyone around them.

On the one hand, in addition to being a music legend, Ice-T is also a household name for his role in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.  And besides numerous other film credits, Ice is often remembered for his character Scotty Appleton in New Jack City and for his critically-acclaimed documentary, Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap, which spawned an entire brand and concert series of the same name. Then, on the other hand, Spike is someone who was a member of Ice’s Rhyme Syndicate but then served decades in prison and now works as an orderly at a hospital in California.  

Many would surmise that Split Decision reads like a real-life example of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” And while there are parallels, the text does so much more than that, making it truly memorable. Not only is the level of description superb with two people providing input, but the insight into their bond and how Ice and Spike established a level of trust and friendship as jewel thieves is very compelling. There are parts of the book where Ice and Spike recall the same event, and seeing their back-and-forth is engaging. And then there are pages when the two couldn’t seem further apart because of their respective paths. However, even in opposite worlds, the ties that bind them are as tight as ever. Therefore, minimizing the book as just one about good and bad choices undermines its many other thoughts about friendship, guilt, loyalty, karma, faith, gratitude, and luck.

There are bad people and good people who make bad decisions. This book is about the latter. And no one is perfect. So while most readers are neither world-famous entertainers nor criminals, it still begs two questions of every single one. One is “What if?” What if someone cheats on a significant test or exam? What if someone doesn’t pull out during sex when they’re not ready to be a parent? What if someone gets behind the wheel after one too many beers? Fuck. A single decision has the potential to change everything. The other question is, “Why?” Why does one do what they do? And why do they do it if they know it is wrong or not in their best interest? Everyone has asked those questions of others and themselves.  Split Decision forces readers to see two different outcomes, knowing that everyone has gotten caught and gotten away with something at one time or another. And therein lies the brilliance of it because it takes the breakdown of two very personal journeys and makes them relatable to all people from every walk of life.

One person that Ice-T has often cited as a significant influence on him is the late pimp and author, Iceberg Slim. Upon reading Split Decision, it reminded me of a famous quote from Slim that encapsulates the depth of these stories, particularly in the aftermath of a life in crime. Slim once wrote, “An emotional debt is hard to square.” And in the book, Ice defines and beautifully illustrates what Slim called “street poisoning” and how the allure of the player life he and Spike were consumed by warped their perspectives of reality. Ultimately, both men, at different points, do what they can in various ways to change their ways of thinking and settle what they owe for how their exploits in the streets touched others. These parts of the book are fascinating because of the different positions Ice and Spike are in and the respective challenges they each face going about doing so.  

Another component that this book deserves credit for is that, while the bleak surroundings of the inner-city get addressed (i.e., racism, police brutality, drugs), they are never cited as the reason for wrong-doing. Some people would take the easy road and say the proverbial system is to blame for their actions. They don’t. Both Ice and Spike hold themselves entirely accountable for their actions. It is a courageous thing to do, and I commend them immensely for it. And with assistance from writer Douglas Century, they provide original voices and perspectives on their lives and the many lessons they’ve learned along the way. Everyone can get something from this book, so reading it is essential for all!

One of the standout cuts from DJ Pooh’s classic album Bad Newz Travels Fast is “No Idea” featuring Kam, the late Roger Troutman, Charlie Wilson, and Shirley Murdock. DJ Pooh calls it his “Computer Love” crew as 3 of the performers on that classic hit perform on the song. “No Idea” was a break from all of the bravado in rap that dealt with mental health and pressure. Guap Drops “Hoe” Music Video & Short Film “STOOP KID” In Partnership With 88rising & Amazon Music

Grammy-nominated Oakland-bred MC, Guap, drops his new self-titled EP, GUAP today via Sam Lancaster‘s TWNSHP, along with the music video and single “Hoe”. Formerly known as Guapdad 4000, Guap’s new EP is accompanied by the unveiling of the trailer for his docufilm STOOP KID in partnership with 88rising, Amazon Music and Prime Video.

GUAP, which includes the COLORSXSTUDIO x NBA 2K hit ‘Black Iverson’, features Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y on “Pose”.

Airing on Amazon Music and Prime Video on July 21, Guap will share his coming of age story as a young Black and Filipino man growing up in the Bay where the need for survival taught him the art of finessing which led him to become the multi-hyphenate he is today: an artist, an entrepreneur and now filmmaker.

In direct dialogue with the film, the illustrative EP GUAP highlights him now thriving as a confident and sure man, proud of his past, despite its difficult challenges, as viewers will see presented in the film. Further marking him now as just ‘Guap.’

“Hoe” follows the critically-praised “Pose”, and his still rising radio hit “I Need Bands“. Prior to this, he experienced a wildly successful 2021, where then Guapdad 4000, saw the release of his collaborative album with !llmind 1176 along with the album’s deluxe edition via Paradise Rising.

Tha Pharcyde to reunite on Fatlip’s upcoming “Torpir” album

(Los Angeles) A legendary former member of the group, The Pharcyde, makes his return to hip-hop with the release of a new album! Derrick “Fatlip” Stewart, a major contributor to the group’s two groundbreaking albums “Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde” and “Labcabincalifornia”, is set to release his solo project “Torpor” with producers Sccit & Siavash The Grouch.

Torpor is a state of hibernation, in which the artist is waking up from. “This record was a longtime coming” says Fatlip. “Get ready for a beast to come outta hibernation” he added. This album theme is highlighted in the track “Wake Up” featuring RBX, famed contributor to The Chronic album by Dr. Dre. The video to the song also brings light to the sub-theme of the album which is the “torpor” in which the city of Los Angeles is in with regards to the rising homeless situation. Homelessness is at an all time high due to city politicians contributing with dirty politics and the turning a blind eye.

Two singles from the Torpor album have been released,  “Dust In The Wind” featuring Krayzie Bone and the previously mentioned “Wake Up” with RBX. However fans will be treated to the long awaited reunion of the original Pharcyde group on two songs from the album. One of the group’s songs is “My Bad” which shows the members apologizing to each other for their years of fighting. The song also features Butch Cassidy on the hook and is co-produced by Jellyroll.

The “Torpor” album is scheduled for a July 29 release exclusively on CD as a limited edition collectors item. A digital release is slated for August 19.
