There is a new VERZUZ battle happening in Inglewood, Ca on May 14th, 2022. The popular VERZUZ format took off during the pandemic, something legendary producers Swizz Beats and Timbaland created and hosted on Instagram initially. Sense 2021 after the popular video app Triller approached the two and purchased the idea and format there have been several classic battles where legendary artist or groups meet on stage and play their biggest records to a crowed while streamed all over the internet. Cypress Hill, and New York rap group Onyx will now meet and do the same. In terms of West Coast rap groups Cypress Hill will be the 1st. Today marks the 27th anniversary of the iconic movie Friday, written by DJ Pooh and Ice Cube. The movie sparked two sequels and rumors of a 4th have been hovering for years, including a recent rant by Ice Cube against Warner Bros. Sticky Fingaz, of the multi-platinum hip-hop group Onyx, was the recent guest on the Holdin Court Podcast where he discussed several topics including working with Dr. Dre, Eminem, and RBX on “Remember Me?” from the diamond-selling The Marshall Mathers LP, leaving Def Jam and why he chose to sign with Universal instead of Aftermath Entertainment, how he joined Onyx, working with the iconic Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC, and more.
During the interview with host Big Court, Sticky reflected upon how he had just left Onyx to start a solo career when he linked up with Dr. Dre who offered him a million-dollar deal to sign with Aftermath Entertainment. Despite Sticky signing with Universal, Dre looked out for him by putting him on records like “Remember Me?” with Eminem and “Buck’em” with Snoop Dogg. On his relationship with Dr. Dre, Sticky told Big Court, “Dre always held me down, even though I went with Universal. He still showed me love, he still did things, he put me on the Eminem album, which sold 16 million copies. It’s like a million dollars. He put me on the Snoop Dogg project. Dre is my nigga, I love Dre.”
When discussing the “Remember Me?” track, Sticky revealed the track was originally recorded for Dre’s album. “Here’s the thing, we did not do that in the studio together. It was me, RBX and Dr. Dre. But that song wasn’t even for Eminem’s album. It was for Dr. Dre’s album. But Eminem liked the song so much, he kept it for his own album. Which I’m glad [about] because it has sold 16 million. But me and Eminem were in the studio where he did a chorus for me, for the song called “What If I Was White”. He said he owed me one. He said, “Yo, man, you know, you bodied my shit, but I only did a chorus for you. I still feel like I owe you, Sticky”. I’m coming to collect, Mr. Slim Shady. Holla!”

Jason Eric Scott, better known by his entertainment name NicNac Tha Don was born and raised in Ontario, Ca. He had a high energy infectious personality that could win over any person. Always easy to catch out of the crowd that’s how he shined. Whether he was cracking jokes, rapping, singing or hosting TV shows, NicNac was the star wherever he went. On April 23rd, 2022 the mayor of Ontario, Ca Paul S. Leon, honored NicNac with a plaque for his activism throughout the community. NicNac spoke avidly about the mistreatment of Black and Brown citizens at a time when tensions with the police were high. He organized a march and shutdown Euclid Ave. a Main Street in the City of Ontario in show of his support of the needed reconstruction of law enforcement practices not only in Ontario but in America overall.
NicNac had a personal relationship with the mayor, the two would often eat breakfast together at a local restaurant. The Mayor would also take the time out to hear form NicNac on current issues within the city. Those that were familiar with NicNac knew he had a green thumb and would garden and grow his own vegetables. When he wasn’t performing, recording or shooting a music video. He would be at home working in his garden, or training his dog. NicNac passed last year on April 21st, 2021, he was 35 years old, and had two albums he was working to complete. Rest In Peace to The Don, King of the IE, may your memory live on.

Snoop Dogg recently appeared on the Full Send Podcast and discussed his plans on restructuring his newly-acquired Death Row Records into an NFT label, breaks down the Web3 technology, and reflects on a conversation with his son about possibly re-recording his albums similar to what Taylor Swift did when she regained her masters.
When discussing how the NFT-side of the business works and what it means to the fans of his music, Snoop said, “Picture me taking one of my classic records that you love to death, and you’ve always cherished it and it means so much to you. Now you have the right to buy it and own it, and to trade it and to make money off of it,” he continued. “Now you actually own a piece of Snoop Dogg’s legacy as opposed to, I have a copy of his CD that I lost. … Now you actually own something that’s actually yours that you can profit off of. I just feel like that’s where the industry is headed. Being in it for so many years, 30 years strong. My fans coming to show up for me, me charging them for everything. T-shirts, concerts, this, that, but not giving them shit back. Don’t sit right.”

WCS staff member Don Dubb caught up with B-Real of Cypress Hill at the grand opening of Dr. Greenthumb’s 6th location, this particular one is located near LAX. For over 30 years Cypress Hill has always been very vocal about the benefits of cannabis use, B Real gives his thoughts on how the cannabis industry is growing and how he is thriving doing business, and educating the masses using his influence for change. Cypress Hill also has a new documentary on Showtime that details there music careers and business involvement in the cannabis industry.

WWE wrestler Montel Vontavious Porter a/k/a MVP links up with Harlem, New York’s Smoke DZA to release the 80 Empire-produced “Legalize It” song for 4/20.
MVP has been dropping music since 2011’s “Holla To Da World” featuring Dwayne Swayze, as well as “Tokyo” in 2013, and 2014’s “Return of the Ronin” which became his ring entrance theme during his time with Total Nonstop Action (TNA).
When asked about collaborating with Smoke DZA on the song, MVP exclusively told Chad Kiser of West Coast Styles, “Smoke DZA invited me to join he, Wale and WSG on the “Hurt Business” remix. I knew I wanted a rapper associated with cannabis on the track when I first wrote it. Since DZA and I developed this relationship he was perfect. Smoke DZA also just recently released Full Court Press, a collaborative project with Girl Talk, Wiz Khalifa, and Big K.R.I.T. via Asylum/Taylor Gang.
On getting the the high-powered duo of 80 Empire on the production for the track, MVP had this to say, ”80 Empire reached out to me to work together some time ago. I knew they were talented and worked with some very talented people. I knew I needed a certain type of beat for this song. I reached out to them and they were ready to rock. They came back with the perfect track for the joint quicker than I expected. It was a pleasure collaborating with them. I’m certain we’ll work together again!”

While he continues to steadily fine-tune his upcoming Osiris EP, Rock N Roll Hall of Fame emcee and legendary hip-hop pioneer MC Ren, of the iconic N.W.A., took to social media today to reveal the cover art for the upcoming Osiris EP, which is being produced by Tha Chill of Compton’s Most Wanted.
Back in October of last year, MC Ren exclusively told Chad Kiser that the EP title is also the name of the first single, “Osiris”.
The Osiris EP will be the Villain’s first release since 2009’s Reincarnated, although throughout the last several years MC Ren has released numerous singles like “Rebel Music” and its remix featuring Ice Cube, “Burn Radio Burn” produced by E-A-Ski, “Back At It”, “Lost” with Tha Chill, and “King Villain” produced by Hushdegod.

Today (April 20), J-Dee of Da Lench Mob just released his newest project titled J-Dee’s Revenge Vol. 1: Success is My Revenge, EP. The 6-track EP features appearances from Kokane, Squeak Ru of Allfrumtha I, Glasses Malone, Kurupt, Ras Kass and others.
Back in January, J-Dee dropped the lead single and video from the project called “Put It All Together”. The Westlyfe-directed video found J-Dee reflecting back over the years of his early career working with DJ Pooh, Ice Cube, WC, building Da Lench Mob, and paying respects to the west coast legacy with shout outs to several west coast pioneers throughout the track like Alonzo Williams, Tone Loc, Arabian Prince, MC Eiht, Dr. Dre, Mixmaster Spade, DJ Aladdin, The D.O.C. and others.

This is a real treat for me growing up a fan of the L.A. Dream Team. The group comprised of Snake Puppy and Rudy Pardee (who passed away in 1998) were kings of the West before the days of gangsta rap with hits like “Rockberry Jam” and “Dream Team Is In The House” along with other jams that rocked the parties and the KDAY airwaves.
Yesterday, Snake Puppy released this new song and video “From The West” that details his roots in West Coast culture. The group no doubt deserves their flowers for paving the way for future generations to do their thing on the West Coast. The L.A. Dream Team does not get overlooked here at WCS. We salute them for their years of work here on the West Coast. Enjoy the video.

There has always been much controversy surrounding the former Death Row CEO. If you talked to 10 different people about their relationship with Suge Knight you would get 10 different stories. One main constant that often gets overshadowed by these claims. Is, how Suge would take care of artist and their families. Yes, the record business is one that has always found a way to “stiff” the creatives out of their money. The same can be said about many operating labels and executives still to this day. But, at the height of his music industry dominance, Suge was on the front lines, giving back to the community, taking care of artists’ families, hiring relatives, and friends recently home from jail or prison giving them well-paying jobs and opportunities to get into the business in one aspect or another.
Death Row reached heights that were previously unmatched at the time amassing a label equity net worth of over 400 Million. Something Motown and the great Barry Gordy had not accomplished. This huge accomplishment deserved to be recognized and celebrated in Music Industry history and black entertainment history. Death Row had a global impact that is still relevant to this day. Artists and producers that were signed to the label or worked very closely with the label went on to sell more records, do more movies, and sign the next generation of talent that would assist in keeping the West Coast atop the charts and on the big stage.

Blizz is a humble emcee who prefers to let his music do the talking, but his passion for his craft is undeniable, and his upbeat spirit is genuinely infectious. Snoop Dogg was featured on the latest episode of Drink Champs with DJ EFN & N.O.R.E., and stated that Nas was originally on “Got My Mind Made Up” with 2Pac from the late rapper’s diamond-certified Death Row Records album All Eyez On Me.
In light of that story from Snoop, Daz took to YouTube to clarify Snoop’s recounting of the collaboration saying, “There’s a lot of ni**as out there that be givin’ wrong information. I was lookin’ at the Drink Champs the other day; Snoop was explainin’ about that Nas verse.” The whole situation wrong. He was never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever on ‘Got My Mind Made Up.’ The original persons that was on ‘Got My Mind Made Up’ was me, Kurupt, Method Man, Redman, Inspectah Deck, and The Lady Of Rage.”
Daz then clarifies, “This is the song he was talking about, which was ‘Don’t Stop, Keep Goin.’ I’ma play it for y’all,” as begins playing the original mix.
