UPS Has Too Short & E-40 “Ain’t Gone Do It” Video Pulled For Copyright Infringement

On February 16, Too Short & E-40 dropped the video for their ProHoezak-produced “Ain’t Gone Do It,” song off their double album release, Ain’t Gone Do It / Terms and Conditions.

In the video the two pioneering rappers were shown in UPS (United Pimpin’ Services) uniforms, as Too Short delivered various packages around the city with E-40 acting as a supervisor.

Shortdog spoke about the video upon its release saying, “It’s always a party and good vibes when you have E-40 and I together – you experienced it on Verzuz, you felt it on our joint album and you’re seeing it in this video. We really wanted to make a visual that would entertain people and keep the positive energy going.”

Now, the real UPS (United Parcel Service) has had the video taken down for copyright infringement.

WCS On Clubhouse: Glasses Malone Talks Hip Hop Uncovered, Dr. Dre Friendship, 2Pac vs Snoop debate and more!

WestCoastStyles is on Clubhouse and every so often we bring in artists to freely talk about details in their music careers. Our first session was with The Chill from Compton’s Most Wanted and last week we hosted Watt’s own Glasses Malone. This chat with Glasses was one for the ages as it was almost 2 hours long but not one moment was boring. From the gate we discuss his appearance on the FX show Hip Hop Uncovered that documents the careers of street legends such as Big U, DEB, Haitian Jack and Trick Trick. Glasses talks about his dealings with Haitian Jack early on his career which is something that even I didn’t know about, being a close friend and all. Then The from there it takes off into his relationship with The Game, Big Fase 100, Dr. Dre and more. Of course we get into his infamous debate between Snoop Dogg and 2Pac about who was the bigger star in the 90’s. It’s a must listen! Join Don Dubb, Shad Reed and myself on these chats if you have the Clubhouse app.

Marshawn Lynch Makes His Boldest Play Yet – Launches Dodi Blunts

OAKLAND, Calif. (Thurs., February 4, 2021)—Iconic NFL running back Marshawn Lynch, one of the most highly sought-after brand ambassadors and Beastmode Apparel, LLC founder and president, today announced the launch of a premium, crafted cannabis brand-platform. Oakland-made, Dodi Blunts will showcase 24kt diamond-infused blunts approved by Lynch himself. Dodi Blunts will launch March 2021 at 24 handpicked retailers exclusively in The Bay area.

Marshawn Lynch stated: “I’ve been around dodi most of my life. As I learned more about the business, the financial upside, the good that could be done, and the doors it could open, I knew it was something I needed to be rockin’ with. And at the end of the day, the industry has the ability to raise up Black and Brown communities—and I intend to lift up those who I can. Plus, dodi allows me to share with the world. What gets me (and my fam) in our zone, so others can get on my level.”

For Lynch, Beastmode is more than a style of play…it’s also his approach to business. Dodi Blunts represents a new endeavor, in a new category, under a new brand name. Dodi Blunts is the latest strategic piece added to a long list of Marshawn’s ownership and private equity/joint ventures that include eSports, sports betting and collectibles, and beverages (alcoholic and non). Dodi Blunts, owned by Lynch, is launched in partnership with Toronto-based innovation house 2nd and Goal Ventures.

“Dodi Blunts is launching with the first athlete of Marshawn’s caliber at a moment in time when all the canna-stars are aligning: Sports, Culture and Society, and Politics and Legalization,” said Jeff Goldenberg, 2nd and Goal founding partner. “Dodi Blunts challenges the traditional concept of ‘Game Day’ rituals and hopes to promote and normalize the relationship between sports and cannabis cultures.”

Lynch will work with the best growers and strains to premium-crafted Dodi Blunts—open sourced and working with those who have like-minded missions. Fans who indulge in the first run of Dodi Blunts will experience the highest, richest potency from palm leaf-wrapped blunts infused with THCa diamonds presented in a reusable blunt tube.

As with everything Lynch does, building on his passion for his Fam First Family Foundation work, there is a community-driven mission built into the Dodi Blunts’ DNA. To support its mission to uplift Black and Brown communities—starting with Oakland—and like communities across the country, Dodi Blunts is partnering with the Last Prisoner Project (LPP) to help address cannabis-related criminal justice reform.

This mission is deeply personal for many of the LPP team, including its Program Associate Evelyn LaChapelle, who served seven years in federal prison for simply depositing cannabis profits into her bank account, she stated: “Receiving an 87-month sentence for a minor cannabis-related offense and being branded a “felon” will undoubtedly convince you that you are unworthy and undeserving of the life you’ve built. But working with the Last Prisoner Project has allowed me to recognize that I am not a bad person, but that I was the victim of unjust laws and discriminatory policies. Through our work the Last Prisoner Project aims to ensure that every last cannabis prisoner is released and able to rebuild their lives. I am so grateful to Marshawn and Dodi Blunts for further destigmatizing this plant, and for committing to give back to those like myself who have been disproportionately impacted by the War on Drugs.”

Fans of Dodi Blunts can look forward to launches of Lynch-curated diamond infused blunts; collaborations with like-minded partners;

expanding product categories and exotic strains; accessories and lifestyle apparel. Dodi™ Blunts can be found via the web DodiBlunts.com and Instagram @DodiOakland.

‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ Film Review

Like many films based on actual events, audiences can see it through the eyes of many lenses: a biopic, historical context, universal themes, etc. The fantastic thing about Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah is that it is seemingly very self-aware of that ability and makes excellent use of it. To say it is a biopic of Fred Hampton, while that would be powerful enough on its own, does a disservice to William O’Neal’s story, and that is who this is ultimately structured around. And just by doing that, the movie immediately adds the complexity of personal ethics and ideals to a story where one might not think they would even be an issue when it’s as clear as the oppressed standing up to the oppressor.

O’Neal, wonderfully played by LaKeith Stanfield, first appears on screen as a thief who attempts to steal a car by impersonating an officer. Rather than going to jail, he infiltrates the Black Panther Party instead, after making a deal with the FBI to act as an informant. It’s an organization deemed by Martin Sheen, in a chilling performance as J. Edgar Hoover, as “the single greatest threat to National Security.” However, as Bill grows closer to its Chicago chapter leader, Fred Hampton, he sees how his defiant stance comes from necessity rather than a desire to cause upheaval. And in addition to his militant position needed to defend the community, Hampton is also intent on its empowerment, whether it be the free breakfast programs that the Panthers provide or the rainbow coalition formed with other disenfranchised groups. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is when he and other Black Panther Party members go to a community meeting with a Confederate flag hanging behind the podium. And in a few galvanizing words, he convinces the poor whites in attendance that they too are being manipulated by a system rigged to keep them down.

This situation speaks volumes about our current political climate as well, as viewers can draw many parallels between then and now. The divide and conquer tactics used in the 60s seem all too familiar compared to recent activity in American politics over the last few years. And so, if anything, one thing that audiences can take away from it is how no one wins in such a situation. To uplift, unity, not separation, is what’s needed.

Daniel Kaluuya is electrifying as Fred Hampton, and something he and the film’s script do, masterfully, is depicted in how Hampton comes across as an imperfect human being. For example, there are scenes where he gets his followers riled up to fight the powers that be but then immediately backs down when members of the party show up with explosives to bomb a government building. Not to condone that either, but it illustrates that Hampton sometimes failed to realize his words’ power. And had he not done so, fewer people probably would’ve ended up in the crosshairs. And yet, Hampton remained blinded by his noble ambitions. A decisive moment is when his pregnant love interest says how it’s easier for him to give himself to the people because he doesn’t have someone else growing inside him. While it would be easier to make things very defined in black and white, the shades of gray are what make this film compelling, especially since we all sadly know Fred Hampton’s fate. William O’Neal’s lesser-known outcome is also revealed but is also heart-breaking. The result of betrayal and guilt. In one case, a man paid the ultimate price for destroying the system. And in the other, a man paid the ultimate price for the system destroying him. It’s the journey that gets these people to this point that is so enthralling, and that’s where audiences can gain so much.

Judas and the Black Messiah is not just about Fred Hampton. It’s not just about overcoming an unjust environment. It’s not just about internal conflicts that can still make the right decisions difficult ones. This movie is a masterful mix of all three, and the result is a motion picture experience that people shouldn’t miss!

2Pac’s ‘All Eyez On Me’ Turns 25

On this day, in 1996, Tupac Shakur released his fourth LP, All Eyez On Me. The landmark double-album got recorded in two weeks after Death Row Records posted Tupac’s 1.4 million dollar bail after being convicted of sexual assault. The album would go on to be both a critical and commercial success. In addition to debuting atop the charts, like his previous album, Me Against the World, it was also very profitable. As a result of it being a double-disc release, the album brought in $10 million in revenue in just seven days. In that respect, it was the second most successful album ever at that time, trailing only behind The Beatles Anthology.

The album spawned numerous hit singles, including “California Love,” “I Ain’t Mad at Cha,” “How Do You Want It,” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.” In addition to numerous classic deep cuts, those would help the album go on to sell over 10 million copies and become one of rap’s all-time best sellers.

Tragically, this would be the last album Pac would release in his lifetime. Exactly seven months later, he would pass away from gunshot wounds received six days earlier after a Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In an interview with The Independent, R&B singer Jon B (who collaborated with Pac on the song, “Are U Still Down”) said it best:

“It was 2Pac’s golden era. As a people, we crawl, we walk, and then we run.  All Eyez On Me is 2Pac running at full capacity.”

Jazz Pioneer Chick Corea Passes Away at Age 79

On Tuesday, February 9, jazz musician Chick Corea died due to cancer in Florida. Corea had a career spanning upwards of half-a-century. He is the recipient of 23 Grammy Awards. And he was even named a Jazz Master for the Arts in 2006. His credentials include, but aren’t limited to, playing with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew, forming the legendary fusion band, Return to Forever, and starting the group Circle. He is also the composer of numerous jazz standards, including “Spain,” “Windows,” and “500 Miles High.”

Born on June 12, 1941, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Corea started playing music at the age of four, and by the 60s, had developed a reputation as a top-tier pianist playing with other noteworthy musicians such as saxophonist Sam Getz and flute player Herbie Mann. In 1968, he linked up with Miles Davis’ band and replaced Herbie Hancock.  The music Chick created has been sampled by many Hip-Hop artists, such as Busta Rhymes, Rakim, Cypress Hill, The Game, and The Freestyle Fellowship.

In a final statement, which his team shared on social media, he said, “I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself, then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.”

At the March 14 Grammy Awards ceremony, Corea could posthumously win two more trophies as he is nominated for Best Improvised Jazz Solo (“All Blues”) and Best Jazz Instrumental Album (Trilogy 2).

Chick Corea is survived by Gayle Moran, his wife, and a son named Thaddeus.

Tha Dogg Pound Visit Big Boy’s Neighborhood To Discuss “DPG 4 Life” Book, Breaking Into Solar Studios To Make “Dogg Food”, Snoop Dogg Shooting Up Daz’s Studio Equipment + More

Daz Dillinger and Kurupt  stopped by Big Boy’s Neighborhood recently to discuss the release of Daz’s new book DPG 4 Life, breaking into Solar Studios to make their debut classic LP Dogg Food, and Snoop Dogg shooting up Daz’s studio equipment after a heated a argument between the two.

During the conversation, Daz and Kurupt shared that they would break into Dick Griffey‘s Solar Studios to record their iconic 1995 album Dogg Food.  According to Kurupt, “Daz would hot wire the elevator.  He knew how to hot wire the elevator, and we’d go up to the woot-wap and get in there because, hey we wanted studio time too!  This is before we were even, we had just made Tha Dogg Pound.”

Daz adds, “Dick Griffey got mad because I was taping over The Whispers!”

The discussion turned to the famous VIP Records store in Long Beach, CA, where Daz was asked by the store owner Kelvin Anderson to take the trash out, and he would sneak equipment into the trash bags on his way out.

Big Boy asked Daz what records he had his hands on during the Death Row Records era that he didn’t get producing credits for.  Daz listed “Serial Killa”, “Ain’t No Fun”, “Lil’ Ghetto Boy”, and “High Powered” as a few.

Watch the video below and get more stories involving West Coast icons Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Suge Knight and more!
